JEAN DUBUFFET

The Hourloupe Cycle Graphics

May 15 – August 15, 2009

The French artist Jean Dubuffet lived from 1901 to 1985.  During his lifetime he was internationally known for paintings, sculpture and prints.  He also became known for his collection of “Art Brut” or objects made my non-professional artists such as children, schizophrenics and prisoners.  His own work was semi-abstract and boldly graphic.  The Hourloupe paintings from 1964, which led to the The Hourloupe Cycle Graphics later in the 1960s and 1970s, suggest an unrealistic universe of graphic energy, mazes of bold lines and patches of red and blue striped areas floating upon backgrounds of solid color. One can imagine amorphous beings within them.
