ARCHIVES: Carl Solway Gallery 1962 - 2023
May 12 - July 14, 2023
In a special tribute to Cincinnati’s late premier gallerist Carl Solway, Carl Solway Gallery will present ARCHIVES: Carl Solway Gallery 1962 - 2023. Opening Friday, May 12 continuing through July 14 at 424 Findlay Street, in Cincinnati’s West End. The exhibition will be devoted to presenting sixty-one years of selected gallery ephemera, including artist’s correspondence, exhibition announcements, drawings, sculptures, posters, photographs, prints, catalogues, and other related materials.
Some of the influential artists of his time with which Carl Solway worked are Harry Bertoia, John Cage, Helen Frankenthaler, Buckminster Fuller, Sam Gilliam, Ann Hamilton, Richard Hamilton, Charlotte Moorman, Claes Oldenburg, Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, George Rickey, Mark Rothko, Saul Steinberg, Pat Steir, Joan Snyder, Andy Warhol, and many others. Archives will highlight artwork and ephemera related to those artists by illustrating the gallery’s enduring cultural influence since its founding in 1962.
Carl sought out and dedicated his life to artists and visionaries that inspired him personally, said Michael. “The artists he chose to show served as influencers and teachers. He believed artists played a critical role in what we deem as the evidence of history.”
