NANCY GRAVES
LITHOGRAPHS BASED ON GEOLOGIC MAPS OF LUNAR
ORBITER AND APOLLO LANDING SITES

Following her earlier series of drawings and paintings related to maps and
charts of remote geographic regions such as the ocean floor and Antarctica,
Graves completed this suite of ten lithographs, her first prints to be produced
in an edition, at Landfall Press, Chicago, in 1972.

Graves made an extensive study of the lunar maps that were produced by
NASA in preparation for the Apollo manned space missions to the Moon
beginning in 1968. With varying degrees of faithfulness to the originals,
the artist transposed portions of individual lunar maps in a large group of
drawings, which subsequently served as the basis for this series. Working
with Jack Lemon, Graves drew the stippled images directly on sheets of
Mylar, which were then transferred to light-sensitive aluminum plates.
To achieve a variety of spatial effects, the artist experimented with chine
colle and printing on Mylar sheets that were laminated to Arches paper.

EDITION: Each work in the series was printed in an edition of 100.
Printed by Landfall Press Inc., Chicago.

I. Part of Sabine D Region, Southwest Mare Tranquilitatis. 1972
Lithograph on Arches Cover white paper, 221/2 x 30". Signed, dated, numbered in pencil.
COMMENTS: This lunar region was the landing site for Apollo 11 in 1969.
II. Fra Mauro Region of the Moon. 1972
Lithograph on Arches Cover white paper, 221/2 x 30". Signed, dated, numbered in pencil.
COMMENTS: This lunar region was the landing site for Apollo 14 in 1971.

III. Maestlin G Region of the Moon. 1972

Lithograph on Arches Cover white and shin ten gu papers with chine colle, 221/2 x 30".
Signed, dated, numbered in pencil.
COMMENTS: The six colors were printed on six sides of three sheets of shin ten gu paper, which were chine colled to the Arches Cover paper. This is the only print in the series in which Graves rendered the latitudinal and longitudinal lines (in violet) present in the original lunar map. Graves left irregular sections of paper unprinted here and else where in the series to mimic those sectors in the original maps where topographical information was incomplete.

IV. Julius Caesar Quadrangle of the Moon. 1972
Lithograph on Arches Cover white paper and Mylar with chine colle, 221/2 x 30".
Signed, dated, numbered in pencil.
COMMENTS: The two colors were printed on two sheets of Mylar, which were laminated to the Arches Cover paper. The green notations were inspired by markings Graves found on a copy of the lunar map.

V. Montes Apenninus Region of the Moon. 1972
Lithograph on Arches Cover white paper, 221/2 x 30". Signed, dated, numbered in pencil.
COMMENTS: This lunar region was the landing site for Apollo 15 in 1971.

VI. Maskelyne DA Region of the Moon. 1972
Lithograph on Arches Cover white and amime paper with chine colle, 22 1/2 x 30".
Signed, dated, numbered in pencil.
COMMENTS: The sixth color was printed on amime, which was chine colled to the Arches paper. The frayed edges of the netlike amime paper are visible at top margin.

VII Sabine D Region of the Moon, Lunar Orbiter Site IIP-6 Southwest Mare Tranquilitatis. 1972
